When it comes to marathons, the focus is often on the fastest runners, the record-breakers, and the champions who cross the finish line with triumphant strides. However, it is equally important to acknowledge and celebrate the individuals who embody determination, perseverance, and the true spirit of the race. As a slow runner or perhaps a first or second timer it can be scary because no one wants to be the ‘last one’. Introducing the Back of the Pack, a group of runners that will always be the last ones to officially cross the finish line.
Madison Marathon 2023 Back of the Pack will be led by Pat Gallagher (half marathon distance) and Zach McDougal (marathon distance). To find the Back of the Pack runners look for their yellow vests or group-identified bibs. These runners intentionally pace themselves to be the last people to cross the finish line, ensuring that all other runners complete the marathon on time.
At the Madison Marathon Expo, participants will have the opportunity to meet Pat Gallagher. Pat is an experienced runner with a passion for supporting Back of Pack runners. He will be available to answer questions, provide guidance, and offer words of encouragement to those embarking on their marathon journey.
